Lead, Don't Follow

We Can't Just Sit Around

Climate change is an issue that encompasses everyone. We all live on this planet. I learned that climate change would happen. The lie was that we would get less snow. This would be good for farmers because there would be less snow and it wouldn't be as cold. The truth is climate change causes extreme weather. It can cause heatwaves and blizzards.

This extreme weather tends to be uncomfortable for people with disabilities.

I know you might be thinking that people with disabilities have to use a lot of disposable items to live. I know I use adult diapers and under pads. You cannot recycle those items. The biodegradable alternatives are not the most comfortable against the skin.

I read a post a few years ago when the straw debate was happening. The post read that people with disabilities don't need to feel ashamed about not being eco-friendly because we can only do so much to reduce our carbon footprint.

This has bothered me ever since I read it. The disability community is a large part of the world’s population. The logic of that statement seems ridiculous. It takes away responsibility from every person with a disability. This undervalues the contribution the disabled community makes to society as a whole.

How could people with disabilities help with climate change? Here are a few suggestions:

● Elect officials who care about climate change and our knowledge about it

● Hold businesses accountable for the amount of pollution they release into the air.

● Encourage companies to develop more ecological products that are also comfortable.

● Recycle what you can.

We all need to do our part to take care of our home because we all will have to deal with the consequences if we don't. This article was inspired by the podcast episode with former Congressman, Bob Inglis. Here is the link to the full interview:
