How Can We Hold Ourselves and Companies We Support Accountable?

I have never thought about monitoring my energy usage. Currently, I have my iPad, my cell phone charger, and the television playing in the background. I like to keep things plugged in so it is easier for me to charge my devices at night while I sleep. Julie Davenport mentioned that we could be more mindful of our energy usage if we had an app on our phones. This is true because there is an app for everything. I have used apps to track everything from my workouts to the number of books I read in a year. Why should energy be any different?

Could you imagine seeing your friends’ energy usage shared on their Instagram? Companies like Amazon are doing their part, too. Amazon wants to run on 100% renewable energy by 2025. Another aspect of the podcast addressed the language of job postings. The way you word a job post can promote exclusivity in the workplace. This is something that makes a lot of sense. I worry about whether the accommodations are reasonable.

The Covid-19 pandemic has shown the world a lot of work can happen from the comfort of your couch. It's our job to hold ourselves and the companies around us accountable. A company's hiring practices and its commitment to sustainability are two important areas.

We could usher in a new world if we start taking responsibility for our treatment of the earth and the people on it.
